Office of City Manager

Welcome Alex Campbell!

From the City Managers Office:

I’m thrilled to serve as City Manager Pro Tem for the City of Talent. I’ve worked in the private sector, for non-profits, the City of Milwaukie, and the State of Oregon. I’ve been incredibly lucky to be able to support myself and my family by working in jobs where I get to make a positive difference, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to work with the residents, businesses, and employees of the City of Talent to achieve your goals. Thank you to Mayor Darby and the City Council for entrusting me with this important work.

Governments are made up of a lot of things: sets of rules, public buildings, infrastructure, and geographic boundaries on a map. Most importantly, city government is an operation run by people. I had a college professor who urged his students to consider public service: “How can you have a first-rate country, without first-rate public servants?” I’ve seen the good and the bad up close—and he was absolutely right. I’m doing this work because I believe in the mission. Your city government provides for public safety, stewards important public assets (such as the historic city hall, and our city streets and parks), and guides public and private investment. Just as importantly, when the city does its job well, it helps build public trust and the will to come together and work for common goals.

My priorities will be to maintain the city’s momentum on important projects, like the Gateway site development; to keep a close eye on the city’s long-term financial health; and support your staff as we move forward under the direction of the City Council. I’ve lived in Oregon for the last twenty years, most of that in Southern Oregon (in Douglas County and the Rogue Valley). I am not naïve about the challenges that we face, but I know this is a wonderful place to live. I look forward to helping make it even better.
